The building was opened in 1971 and was initially used as a research facility to study the problems and needs of people with disabilities in rural Manitoba. Over time, it has been used by the Bank of Montreal, the campus bookstore, and the University Archives.

The building was renovated in 2006, and the university uses it today as an art centre, housing the painting and drawing studios and the art gallery.
