Commercial Fishing in Winnipegosis

The second biggest lake in Manitoba, Lake Winnipegosis, was a huge source of fish for the Manitoba commercial fishing market.

Ice fishing was the biggest generator of fish from the lake, dating back to the late 1890s.

With the completion of the railway to Winnipegosis in 1897, the community and the commercial fishing industry took off.

The fishermen on the lake were nomadic and faced many challenges, overcome through inventiveness and perseverance.
